The client wants free work up front – what to do?

Have you ever called a plumber and told them if they fix your leaky faucet today, all of your neighbors will hire them to do the same in a few months? That’s what this guy was asking ME to do…
I had been working with this guy for 2 months…
But, by working, I don’t actually mean I was doing real work…
All the work I was doing was answering questions about how we were going to work together, helping him refine his idea and advising him on the best way to achieve his goal.

I hadn’t been paid one cent yet…
But, that’s okay…I mean, we needed to work out the project details, right?
Plus, I was really excited to work with this guy as I knew working with him was good for my portfolio and could lead to more business with him and others in his industry down the road.

Tuesday morning, I get an email from him…

The subject line read: Let’s get started
I raced to open it:
In the first few lines of his email… it was clear….
He was throwing our plans out the window and didn’t want to go through with the long term contract we had been working out.
He had a new idea, one he thought was really brilliant!
“I’m willing to get started with the project on the condition you will do it at no cost on this first one, only. I’d need it done quickly so I can share your work with my associates. Once they see it, I know it will lead to a lot of high paying work for you very quickly.”

WTF

So, not only did he want it free, but wants it fast too?
I couldn’t believe what I was reading.
My blood was boiling.
Then it clicked… the two months of conversations all made sense. My gut was telling me to drop this client fully, the whole time, but did I listen?
Not even for a second.
But this was the final straw. I thanked him for his time and walked away.

This wasn’t an easy lesson to learn, but now it was clear…

Don’t put up with bad clients, and…
Trust your gut.
Good clients are not this hard to work with…
And, there’s a world full of good clients out there.
Just go find some of those.

From that day I decided two things:

1. I set clear boundaries that I don’t work for free.
2. Proposals are free, but my time planning and consulting your project is not.
If you’re frustrated by working with difficult clients, you don’t have to be.
There are lots of easy ways to find good clients, and one of my favorite ways to start is to help clients with their online reputation and reviews.
It’s a great foot in the door.
Every business owner knows they need good reviews, but almost none of them have a strategy to get more of them on an ongoing basis.

And that’s what you’ll help with…

Want proof? Just do a google search for the next business you see and you’ll find they probably have very few reviews, they’re not recent or they’ve not responded to negative ones. (Do it, search and see what I mean.)
I’ve found these businesses are willing to talk to me about this too.
It has turned into a very good stream of revenue for my business and the clients are great too.

If you think this could be your answer to finally attracting the type of clients you deserve,

I’ve put together a no cost on-demand training called “How to Start A Super Successful Online Review Business and Get Clients Fast”

Specifically I’ll be covering…

a. How to generate leads.  I’ll actually train you on one of my lead generation strategies that you can test during the training.

b. How to offer this service…  How you get reviews for your clients from their customers in an automatic way.

c. Why this service helps you attract happy clients that are willing to pay, and often up-front before you do the work.  (which was the opposite of what that client was trying to do to me!)

It’s a full training that takes all of my experience since 2003 of running a 20 person web design and digital marketing agency. You’ll learn a lot that you’ll be able to implement right away. It doesn’t matter if you’re just getting started, or are looking to grow and expand your current business.

This is the answer.

Register for the on-demand training here:

I’m looking forward to sharing this with you because nobody should have a business they don’t love.

In this training I’ll show you what I did to transform my business into one that attracts great clients who are willing to support my business.

Stop putting up with bad clients, because the good clients are out there and I’ll show you how to find them in this training.
