Getting Over the Hurdles of Taking Action

Tim Ferris says in his book The 4-Hour Work Week, “the stars will never align, and the traffic lights of life will never all be green at the same time.”

Yet, many of us wait for perfect conditions to arrive before we take action.

What if Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak waited to start working on the projects that launched Apple Computer until they could afford a real office space instead of working from a garage?

What if Morgan Freeman gave up on his acting career after only performing in stage productions and children’s series?  He only broke through to the big screen at the age of 52.

The world is full of lots of examples of people who took imperfect action.  They got started and continued to work under conditions that weren’t ideal or what they really wanted.

Unfortunately, there are many more examples that we will never hear about of people who never got started in the first place. Conditions weren’t right, and they didn’t act. Kind of sad when you think about it, right?

When it comes to my agency, taking imperfect action has served me well…

… showing up to networking meetings as a scared kid!

… selling projects even though I didn’t know the right way

… hiring employees even though I was scared to spend the money

… raising my rates

Imperfect action is just another version of fear of the unknown, but it never feels like we’re scared.  It disguises itself as other things. When we don’t take action, we justify it as doing the right things to get ready.

But guess what?  You’ll never be ready.

The only way to get ready is to start doing.  Because being ready is a combination of knowledge and experience.

Don’t get trapped in acquiring knowledge thinking that it will magically give you the experience you need to feel ready.  Unfortunately the only thing that will give you experience is taking imperfect action.

Where in your agency have you taken imperfect action?  And, what advice would you give to another agency that’s waiting for “conditions to be perfect?”While on it, don't forget to apply for a call with our director of coaching. Don't wait for the perfect time to invest in your agency. The sooner you start, the sooner you'll see results.
