Big Bad Yelp…

If you provide digital marketing, websites or other marketing services to clients, you need to take a tip from Yelp.

(yes, that Yelp – the one that’s a never-ending source of controversy for businesses… but, hear me out on this…)

A while back, I got two very fancy looking packages from Yelp, mailed to my office.

I was confused because I don’t do any business with them. Sure, I have their app installed on my phone, but that’s about it.

When I opened the package, it was filled with tons of Yelp branded swag and a letter addressed to me.

It was an invitation to join the Yelp Agency program.

Up until that point, I hadn’t considered offering their services.  

The letter explained an attractive reason to represent their services and I was close to emailing the person who sent it to me…


But, something was holding me back…

I had this feeling like there was more to the story. I put the letter down and I thought about it for a few minutes.

Then, it hit me.

Why is Yelp dumping so much money into expensive gift boxes?

That seems like a lot of money to spend only for the slight chance I might actually sign on with them.  

If they were willing to take that gamble, maybe helping clients with reviews is a big opportunity and getting clients to sign on is easy if you know how to position it.

So, instead of emailing the Yelp representative, I decided to email 3 people that I knew owned a local business instead.

I sent a one-sentence email that simply asked something like, “would you be willing to talk with me about (business name)’s online reviews?”

Within only minutes I had two replies that said, “sure.”

At that moment, I knew I was on to something…

Businesses need help with their online reviews, they’re willing to talk about it and potentially hire someone like me to help them with it.

After that, I set up some meetings with the businesses I emailed and they both signed up with me to help them get more 5-Star reviews on all review sites, not just Yelp.

These two clients were so happy with what I did for them, they referred to other business owners and have acted as references for me too.

Since then, I’ve signed on over 200 local clients to help them with their reviews!

I’m so grateful that Yelp sent that package to me because it sparked an idea that has helped me create my own amazing business model helping businesses with their online reputation.

I’ve got our clients amazing results, and it has been one of the easiest and most profitable aspects of my business.

It’s my hope that the tip that Yelp gave me is something that inspires you as well…
