In large corporations, you’ve probably heard of “climbing the corporate ladder.”
Over the years, I’ve watched my friends who chose a more traditional career battle it out to climb the ladder. I’ve seen an endless stream of updated LinkedIn profiles… new jobs, promotions, and career changes….
All of it in an effort to further their career, discover their passions, and get paid bigger bucks.
But does a corporate ladder exist in a small agency?
In my early days, my latter looked more like a footstool. 😆 There was no ladder to climb. There was no boss above me. There simply weren't any moves that I could make that would let me do the same things I saw my friends doing.
But, that’s when I realized something very important…
As agency owners, we don’t climb ladders, we build them. 🤯
Even as an “agency of one”, I was the CEO. I was sitting atop my company’s corporate ladder. And, as the company grew and I brought on contractors or employees, the ladder grew beneath me.
This was an incredible shift in my perspective.
While all my friends were trying to scramble their way upwards, I was already at the top of my own ladder and it was my job to make sure I STAYED THERE.
I did this by continuing to learn new skills and improving in the areas that my business needed me the most.
To be honest, I felt left out and alone in the early days of my business. I envied the opportunities that existed for my friends who had jobs because of what I saw as their ability to be upwardly mobile.
That was until I saw how much more power I had inside of my own business simply by committing to building my own ladder.
