Motivating Factors

Do you know what motivates the decisions you make with your agency?

It might not be as clear-cut as you think.

Recently, I was reflecting on the processes I use to make choices in my own life…and I started thinking about my Jeep.

My Jeep has a manual transmission. When I first tell people this, they’re a bit surprised, because most cars nowadays are automatic.

Naturally, the next question they ask is, “Why did you get a manual?”

And, until now… I have never really known how to answer this question.

When I bought my Jeep, I didn’t know how to drive a stick shift.

And, even weirder — I didn’t test drive the car before I bought it!

I specifically requested a manual transmission Jeep from a faraway dealership and had my new car delivered to my home. I bought it sight-unseen, without ever driving a stick shift car in my life.

So…why on earth did I make this decision?!

I may have wanted a little of the “coolness cred” that comes with driving a stick shift…

But, looking back, I think my decision was mainly rooted in two things:

  1. A manual transmission would force me to be more present while driving.
  2. Having a manual transmission would push me to learn a new, useful skill.

I knew that shifting gears and playing a more active role in the operation of my car would cause me to stay present while driving. As a result, I would be less preoccupied by any notifications from my phone or worries with work.

Plus, I wanted to push myself to learn how to drive a stick shift. I figured this would be a fun challenge…and I would be forced to learn quickly because I was motivated by the prize of driving my new car.

When I break down my decision-making process like this…it doesn’t seem so strange after all.

In fact, I try to make decisions based on these two factors with my agency all the time:

  1. Staying Present
  2. Adding to my arsenal of skills

So, now I want to ask you…

When you break down the decisions you make in your business and your life, what are your key motivators?

Do you make decisions that will allow you to grow and learn…or do you make decisions that keep you where you are?
