If you are an agency owner, you might be CRAZY.
That’s not a bad thing, it's just that you’ve committed to doing something that 99.9999% of the population will never do…
Own a business.
Being a successful business owner is not for the faint of heart and takes a lot more than just skills and capabilities.
Owning a successful agency is kind of like deciding to run a 100-mile ultra marathon. (yes, running 100 miles…. In a row. lol)
Actually, one of our Inner Circle Members, Steve Gasser has accomplished this amazing feat. In one of our mastermind sessions, Steve shared what it took to do this, and I think there’s a lot we can learn from this about how to run an agency.
You see, it’s easy to assume that the main (and only) skill Steve needed to run that distance was the capability to do so.
But that’s not true.
He actually needed lots of other things. In addition to his running capability…
He needed a clear vision of his goal, to run 100 miles.
He needed to adopt the identity of a runner or athlete
He had to believe that it was possible
He had to ensure his behaviors were in alignment with his goal
And, he had to ensure that his environment supported him.
When people set out to build a successful agency, oftentimes they only focus on skills like..
… digital marketing or website building skills
… how to find new clients
… or, how to use software, social media, or other tools
And, in the process, they forget about the other components that help them achieve their goals of building a successful business that they own (as opposed to the business owning them!)
As Steve has gone through the journey of building an agency that can run without him, he’s had to…
Set a clear vision: to own an agency that runs without him
Set a clear identity: “I am an agency owner”
Hold beliefs: “I deserve to be paid on value, not my time.”
Align his behaviors: “I work ON my business, not just IN it.”
Set his Environment Up: “My family supports me. I have fast internet and a great computer.”
It’s easy to get caught up in the acquisition of new skills and capabilities however, I’ll bet you’re already very strong in that department.
If you want to build a successful agency (which is a crazy awesome goal), you’re going to need more than skills alone. You need the right environment, behaviors, beliefs, identity, and vision too.
