Here’s why your agency can’t scale (and what to do about it.)
There will come a point in every agency owner's life where they are faced with a difficult decision…
1. Simplify your business, or
2. Let it collapse under its own weight.
Let me explain…
When you start your agency, it’s easy (and sometimes necessary) to take on just about any project that might come your way.
Need a website? SURE!
Run Facebook ads? YUP!
Custom plugin and zapier integration? GOT YA COVERED!
That was me. I’d say yes to any project and make all sorts of commitments and promises. That enthusiasm, paired with a lack of systems, eventually trapped me. The projects were too custom to easily delegate, and I was too busy to figure out an alternative.
These projects that I was taking on were the definition of “Snowflake Projects.”
Eventually, I was faced with that choice. Simplify or die.
Mature agencies understand what they are good at, but more than that, they understand the importance of selling services to their clients that can scale. They understand that to truly grow, they must be able to attract more clients without growing their resources to produce at the same rate.
The reality is that agencies that say YES to everything will never scale because complexity is the enemy of scale.
I tell this to agency owners, but some of them still fight the idea. “Agency work is so custom, I can’t possibly simplify.”
Well, tell that to Henry Ford, who built the first auto assembly line.
Tell that to FedEx, who invented overnight shipping and revolutionized the industry.
There are countless examples of businesses that took the complex and simplified it. They built systems and continued to grow and attract happy customers.
If you think you can’t simplify, you’re not being creative enough.
You can be lazy and trapped by your own agency, or you can be smart and have an agency that can grow and scale without you. Your choice.
