Getting Paid On Time

How much money you charge is up to YOU.

But, when do you get paid?  Well, that’s up to YOUR CLIENT.

OR IS IT!?

If you’re anything like me, I was at the mercy of the client to get paid.  Especially when it comes to web design projects.

50% upfront.  50% on completion.

The first payment was easy.  BUT, getting paid for launching a website was always in the clients' hands.  I could never predict when a website would be finished and launched because it totally depended on my client’s feedback and input to get to the finish line.

SO, in lots of cases, I’d be stuck.  I had been paid for half of the project, but had done 90% of the work!  That just wasn’t fair.

Eventually, I got fed up and decided to change things up.

Here’s what I did…

Instead of the old 50/50 model.  I invented the 50/40/10 model.

Here’s how it works:

50% to start

40% when we START building the site

10% on launch

At first I was worried that clients would tell me to go jump off a bridge and hire one of my competitors instead.

But GUESS WHAT.

None of them did.  Nobody had a problem with this.  If it ever did come up, I’d just explain that I was invoicing them for the phase of the work that was just about to begin.  And most were cool with it.  Worst case scenario is I adjusted the percentages to something like 50/30/20.

So now, if a client delayed the project, I would have done  90% of the work and been paid for 90% of the project.  YES!

Just because everyone else is doing 50/50 doesn’t mean it’s right.

This is your business.

Get paid how you want.
