Avoid Being Tricked by Bad Advice

Agencies need to be on the lookout for bad advice.

Would you hire a personal trainer that was clearly out of shape?  Would you hire a home builder that was afraid to use a hammer?

You see, there’s lots of advice for agency owners, but you ALWAYS need to consider the source.

Here’s what I mean…

I was recently called a “guru” by one of the agencies attending our coaching call.

In fact, she was complimenting AJ and I on our coaching (which was amazingly cool of her) and how it had a profound effect on her way of thinking about her own agency.

BUT, I had to stop and correct her.

I’m not a guru.  I’m an agency owner.

It is INSANELY common for people in the coaching space (and teaching in general) to teach something that they have never successfully done on their own.

As the saying goes, “if you can’t do, teach.”  But, in today’s world, I think that’s BS.

In recent months, I’ve heard stories of coaches that…

… never owned the type of business that they now coach.

… owned the business but it was a long time ago.

… owned the business but found more success in teaching than owning it.

… have to rely on third parties to actually do the tactical teaching.

… build coaching programs, but hardly even interact with their students.

The reality is there are very few of us that coach from a position of authority. I personally believe that authority comes from OWNING a business that is the model for what they teach.

How else do these coaches KNOW what works and what better PROOF can you present to people who are considering making an investment in their services?

Don’t get me wrong, not everybody out there is out to trick you.  There is a TON of amazing advice out there for agencies too.  I’d be foolish to think I’m your only source…

I just want to point out that it’s easy to hook people’s attention with shiny objects and that’s why true experience MATTERS.  Demand it from those you listen to, or move on.

Right now we’re getting ready to start our 5-Day Challenge called Agency War Plan.  It’s all about building a 90 day written action plan to double your agency.  Find the details and link to register in the description or head to agencywarplan.com.
