This is a simple two-page contract that we use in our agency to sell a project and to build an understanding and set expectations when we're starting with a client. When I was first getting started this was a step that I skipped, and even once I brought people on, if they were signing on projects, it's a step that they skipped a lot too.
The reason I avoided contracts is because I was telling myself a story that it might kill the project. This client was being generous enough with their money and their time that I didn't want to kill the deal because I'm asking them to read a bunch of fine print. I was just scared to do it.

Finally, after getting burned a few times, I decided that if I was going to be successful I needed to have a contract that worked for me. I want it to be really simple to understand both for me and for the client. I wanted to be fair to both parties involved. I needed something I was confident to present to a client without the worry of it impacting the deal. Now that I have this contract, I can say that it has never impacted a deal, it has only framed me and my company as a professional organization that takes all aspects of our business seriously. It builds great confidence which is awesome!
Now, when I present the contract to a client, instead of havin them read it verbatim, I just summarize it. The video below is a brief a reenactment of the brief presentation I give to clients. I'm summarize the contract (which you can download here) so it makes it easy for them to understand and want to sign.
